LET GO THE GUILT
Romans 8:1-2
1. There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit
2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death.
As I begin to meditate over this text, it hits me as a spiritual truth that when Jesus came into the world, He came as a solution to the situations of men. He offers hope to a hopeless world, healing to a hurting world, deliverance to people who got tied up in bondage – bondage to sin, bondage to drug, bondage to alcohol, bondage to immoralities. And He offers balance to people who are suffering from imbalances due to their own bad behaviors. Matthew 11:28.
But not many come to Him. Some are ignorant of what Jesus can do. Some are too busy. Many do not believe Him, and many more are condemned at heart, feeling guilty, by the outcome of their own shortcomings. They figure they do not deserve such a love and grace. And their guilty conscience is keeping them from becoming all they can be in the Lord.
But do not think only the people who are not Christians can suffer from guilty conscience. In fact, a godly walk does not mean the absence of conflicts. You can be holy like Peter, and get degrees like Paul, and touch God’s heart like David, and still be getting ready to lose your mind for the guilt you feel in your heart. It can be so bad you cannot lift your chin off your chest and look up.
For clarity, let’s talk first about conscience. Conscience is a gift from God. Everyone has conscience. It is the moral law within. It helps us to distinguish between what is morally right, or wrong. It is the Heart Police. But it is not an instrument to condemn you to guilt. It is an opportunity to listen to the Holy Spirit to instruct you, direct, correct, comfort, empower you to do good. You may experience clear conscience when you do well. You will fear no evil, because you have done no evil. You will be confident to approach the throne of mercy to obtain grace at all time. Romans 13:1-7; Hebrew 4:16.
Likewise you can suffer guilty conscience, when you do what is morally wrong. Guilt operates on the platform of our conscience. Guilty conscience is an awful experience. It will haunt you all your days. You will have no rest. You would think the whole world is out to get you. You waste emotional energy on things that don’t matter. You lose all the energy you need to keep good with your job, studies, business, relationship, children, even God. You cannot imagine the torture of a violated conscience. Shakespeare said it all, “To be alone with my conscience is hell enough for me.” Romans 13:4.
You can have some conflicts in your life and you think it is some kind of enemy attack, or some evil forces that are out to get you. That is not the case in most cases. The truth is God wants to bless and prosper you. He wants to give you peace, joy, confidence and sound mind. But you might be going through life dragging under the weight of guilt. Guilt can take up space meant for the good things that God wants to deposit in your life. It can contaminate your mind so much you find it difficult to enjoy your life. You would be beating yourself up over something you did wrong some time ago. It will take up the space of your mind that you don’t have room for passion or excitement to do what you want to do.
When the Bible says, “Give no place to the enemy,” That’s not just talking about the forces of darkness. He is talking about things that can resist the blessings of God in your life. Giving place to guilt is worse than giving place to the temptation that caused you to do the wrong in the first place. Guilt will make you lose favor with God and cause you to miss His blessings. You can’t let it stay. Ephesians 4:27.
I am saying you got to get out any feelings of guilt that seeks to occupy your mind. Yes. You have control of what stays on in your mind. You got to make up your mind, “I am not going to give no place to any guilty conscience. I won’t let this stay in my mind and mess up my life." 2 Corinthians 10:3-6.
We all feel the foolishness of what we did wrong. But keeping the guilt of it would only create conflicts in your mind, and destroy your destiny. You have done the foolish thing you did. Now you do not have to get more foolish by holding on to the guilt you feel. Life is too good to go through it with guilty feeling holding you down.
When David says, “God fills my life with good things so I can feel young and strong.” He is saying God removes his guilt and fires him up. Many feel old and grumpy, not because of their age, but because they are filled up with guilt that they have no room for the good things that God wants to release into their life. If you will let go of the guilt, God will move in with peace, confidence and courage. He will give you beauty for ashes, gladness for sadness, and honor for shame. Psalms 103:1-5.
When we are talking about being young, it's not just young physically. I mean young in the spirit, that is, passionate, excited, and exuberant. But guilt will give you worries and make you weak, make you old, give you wrinkles, cause you to be angry and resentful. It would cut short your life. But freedom from guilt will give you the right attitude and increase the days of your life.
You did it, whatever wrong you did. You made the mistakes. But don’t go about with your face to the ground. That will poison your life. Believe that God is in control and He is merciful and faithful. You can open up to God and tell Him about it. God’s mercy is not limited by time, space, or acts. Ask Him to forgive you. And He will. And He will give you victory over the guilty conscience. And you will have room for good things. 1 John 1:9.
Everybody might point at you and judge you. Let them say. The Devil might stand to accuse you. Let him say. The enemy is called the accuser of the brethren. He wants to remind you of every mistake you made since you were born. He did that to Joshua. But Joshua paid him no mind. Then God shut up the Devil's mouth. If you let the guilt go, you would be filled with faith, joy, strength, and peace.
Zachariah 3:1-5; Revelations 12:10.
You may want to ask, "How do I get victory over guilt?" Jesus knows you can be wrong and make mistakes. He is not alarmed when you mess up. He only gets goose bumps when you hold on to the guilt in your mind. Guilt is not of God. It is the enemy’s material. And Jesus wants to give you victory over it, and deliver you from its grip, so you can have sound mind.
Guilt is common to all. You cannot stop yourself from making mistakes some of the time. And you may not be able to keep guilty feeling from coming. But you can keep it from staying. You have to release it. Guilt is not God’s material. It belongs to the devil. That’s why it is an infection in your mind. It is the toxin of life. It makes you sick, weak, fearful, and insecure. The Bible says offences would come. They are not so bad if you know what to do with them. They become big deal only when you keep feeling bitter and guilty about it. Then your heart will be poisoned and your future will become dim.
But the key is do not hold on to it. You have God’s mercy available to you. You got to always forgive yourself, and move on. Guilty conscience is the evidence that you did not forgive yourself. The moment you ask God to forgive you, He forgives you. God has turned His face away from your iniquities. He is not writing down your offences no more. Someone is trying to bring up the mistakes in your past. That’s not God. It’s the accuser trying to keep you in chain. If you will forgive yourself and call off the accusing voices, you would be free of guilt. Hebrews 8:12; 2Corinthians 5:19; Romans 8:1-2.
It’s easy to live your life in regret, thinking about what you should have done differently. “I should have raised my children better. I should have held on to my marriage. I should have finished college.” The enemy will make you go through life looking in the rear-view mirror, living in guilt and regret. Do not let him do that to you. You cannot do anything about your past. But you can do something about your life now to guarantee your glorious future. Philippians 3:12-14.
If you give in to guilt, you will not have the confidence to move forward. But if you will lose your doubt, and find your faith, and tell yourself, “I am gone past those stupid things I did in the past. I am now operating in the Wisdom of God. I am set for the higher level of success, accomplishments, and fulfillment. I am moving forward.” If you will say it and walk in it by faith, you will be rid of guilt. And you will have peace, joy, confidence and sound mind.
My point is the enemy will accuse you and say, “Look what you have done. God is not going to forgive you.” But your victory has nothing to do with what you have done. It’s all about what Jesus has done. Salvation is not about what we manage to avoid or what we try to resist. It is about what we embrace, that is, the love, the mercy, the grace, and the blood that Jesus shed at Calvary. Romans 3:24.
The Bible reminds us that just as you receive Christ, you should continue in Him. What that is saying is as you received salvation by grace through faith, the same way you receive victory over guilty conscience by faith. You can say, “God, I have made a lot of mistakes. I don’t deserve to be saved.” That exactly is what Jesus is all about. He saved you by grace not by your strength. You are not saved because you deserve it. You are saved because you believe Him. Colossians 2:6; Ephesians 2:8-9.
Friend, next time the accuser raises his voice and say, “Look what you’ve done," you can raise your voice back and tell him, “I know I am not perfect, but I am forgiven. I may not be where I should be, but I am making progress. I am not where I used to be." Don’t let guilt poison your heart and mess up your future. Let it go. God has let your iniquities out of his mind. Let it out of yours as well. Victory belongs to the man who believes in the reality of what Jesus has done on the cross. Colossians 2:13-14; 1 John 5:4.
Besides, what you did wrong is not the greatest sin. The greatest sin is you do not believe that God has forgiven you. The greatest sin is you do not believe in what Jesus has done to save you. You choose to believe the lie of the devil instead of believing the truth of God. That is the greatest sin. And that is what can cause your total demise. But if you will expose the lie of the enemy to the truth of God, you will walk in total victory. John 3:16.
I am not saying that your victory over guilt is a liberty to sin some more. No, it is not. But surely, guilty conscience is a barrier to good success. When Jesus says, “Blessed are the pure in heart…” It means you are going to be blessed when you stop feeling guilty for what He has already forgiven you. Matthew 5:8.
And when you do not feel guilty about your mistakes no more, knowing that your God is not feeling angry about it, that He is not disappointed in you, that God is 100% satisfied with you by your position in Christ, you will be filled with peace, joy, confidence, sound mind, good health and long life.
Hallelujah
LET'S PRAY:
Stand straight on your feet and pray to heaven:
Your season has finally come
This is your hour of restoration
God shall arise with Grace in your favour
And every mountain of guilt in your heart shall sink
Whatever carries the mark of guilt in your life
I command the Grace of heaven to take over
And turn your mistakes to miracles
The Accuser has lost the battle over your life
He shall have no more say in your case
He is tightly shut up
I decree God’s unusual grace over your life
I release pleasant surprise of joy unto your heart
Plus multiplied favor, blessing, honor, and praise
So shall it be
In the gracious name of Jesus, I pray.
Thank You, Father Lord
AMEN.
Do you receive the victory over guilt today?
If you do,
Then, give God a shouting praise
